21-001. Definitions

21-100. A judge shall uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary

The Court of Appeals is the intermediate appellate court in the state of New Mexico.

(Photo: 2006) It sits between district courts and certain administrative agencies, which are below it, and the New Mexico Supreme Court, which is above it. Its jurisdiction covers the entire state. The Court of Appeals currently reviews appeals in all cases, except criminal cases involving sentences of death or life imprisonment, appeals from the Public Regulation Commission, and cases involving habeas corpus. The Court's caseload is about 900 cases per year.

Established in 1886, the State Bar currently (02/2008) has over 8,144 members. It was incorporated under the laws of the State of New Mexico in 1978. Prior to that, the State Bar operated as an agency of the Supreme Court of the State of New Mexico, established by State Statute on March 17, 1925. It is now independent of the court system.

This is a state court of general jurisdiction serving Bernalillo County. The Third Judicial District Court is a state court of general jurisdiction located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Third Judicial District consists of the same geographic area as Dona Ana County.

The district court has jurisdiction over criminal cases, domestic relations (divorce, child support and custody, domestic violence), probate cases, children's court (abuse and neglect of children, juvenile delinquency, adoptions) and all general civil cases (auto accidents, contract disputes, real property disputes, violation of civil rights).
